HISTORIC MITCHELVILLE FREEDOM PARK
Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park on Hilton Head Island, South Carolina, commemorates the site of Mitchelville, the first self-governed town of formerly enslaved people in the United States, established in 1862. The park offers visitors informative exhibits, historical structures, a new interpretive trail, a pier for scenic views, and hosts a series of commemorative events.
