Squire Pope, located near Skull Creek, represents the largest Gullah neighborhood on the Island and encompasses areas along Squire Pope, Gumtree, and Wild Horse roads. Historically, the community supported farms producing watermelon, beans, and cattle, and became a hub for shrimp boats and an organized fishing cooperative on Skull Creek. Before the bridge was built in 1956, most Gullah neighborhoods had one-room schoolhouses, while Squire Pope stood out for having a two-room schoolhouse that served elementary students in the community.
The area also contains important cultural and historic landmarks, including Mount Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, the Amelia White Cemetery, and the Green’s Shell Enclosure, an archaeological site dating back to 1335 A.D. Together, these elements underscore Squire Pope’s legacy as both a vibrant Gullah community and a living repository of Island history.
