Encompassing areas along Union Cemetery Road near the Big Hill community, Grassland was known for its abundant production of watermelon, beans, corn, and other crops. Farmers owned large tracts of land, facilitating successful agricultural operations. Union Cemetery, once known as Government Cemetery, served as the burial ground for soldiers who died during the Civil War on Hilton Head Island.
