Juneteenth: A Celebration of Freedom, Resilience and Culture
Juneteenth holds deep meaning within African-American communities across the country—and especially here in the Lowcountry, where the spirit of freedom runs strong. Though the Emancipation Proclamation was issued by President Abraham Lincoln on January 1, 1863, declaring enslaved people in Confederate states to be free, that promise remained unfulfilled in many areas. It wasn’t until June 19, 1865—when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas and enforced General Order No. 3—that the last remaining enslaved African Americans learned of their freedom.
That historic day gave rise to Juneteenth—a powerful annual commemoration of liberation and an enduring symbol of African-American resilience. More than just a date, Juneteenth represents generations of hope, struggle, and triumph. While officially observed on June 19th, many Juneteenth events take place on the third weekend of June.
