The Gullah Museum of Hilton Head Island’s Old Fashioned Gullah Oyster Roast is an annual celebration of Gullah Geechee culture, heritage, and cuisine—bringing the community together for fellowship, storytelling, and authentic coastal traditions in a family-friendly setting.

Join us for an evening conversation with author Keith Rushing as he discusses his book Descended: Searching for My Gullah-Geechee Roots. This program explores his journey into his ancestral past and the history of Gullah Geechee culture—tracing the path from enslavement to freedom and independent community life on a nearly all-Black island in the 20th century.
